Ramotshere Moiloa two new councillors sworn in

The Council of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality has recently sworn in two councillors from the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The swearing in follows the untimely death of African National Congress (ANC) ward six councillor; Paul Lekwape; and the EFF’s reordering within its party. The two councillors Danny Moabi and Tsholofelo Sebolao were sworn in by Magistrate Nombulelo Khuzwayo in the council chambers.

The Speaker of Council; Portia Letshufi, Mayor Dina Pitso along with several councillors, management of the municipality, families of new councillors and community members gathered to witness the formal introduction of the councillors.

In her opening remarks; Letshufi outlined the process that was followed to fill the vacant seats so that the community should not be confused since council was inaugurated in 2021. “When a councillor passes on or resigns from the party it creates a vacancy in the council and the seat should be declared vacant to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The IEC will then facilitate the method of filling the vacant seat; which can vary. In a case of a ward councillor; by-elections should be held, if it’s a Proportional Representative (PR) councillor a special election may be called to allow voters to choose a new councillor or a party is allowed to submit the name of the replacement councillor. I am saying all this so that our people can get the knowledge on how the council is constituted”, said the speaker.

The two Councillors are not new to the municipal environment since they have both served in the previous council. They bring a wealth of experience, insight, and a proven track record of advocating for the best interests of the community. The council looks forward to their continued contributions and leadership.

The role of councillors encompasses various important tasks, ranging from policy-making to community engagement. Both councillors have the necessary skills to fulfil these responsibilities effectively.

The swearing-in marked an important milestone for the community as two dedicated individuals officially stepped into their roles as councillors. As the community looks towards the future, it can rest assured that these councillors will effectively represent their interests and work towards the betterment of all.
